The installation had to be opened again that afternoon. The reversal showed that the box was not defective: the specified depth, calculated fill and mounting method were wrong for the device and cable entry. That short story is common in export projects because \u201cone gang\u201d describes the device opening, not a universal outside dimension.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u0645\u0644\u062e\u0635:<\/strong> A practical single-gang specification needs outside height and width, usable depth, internal volume, entry pattern and device\/cover compatibility. NEC\/NFPA 70 Article 314.16 calculates box fill; it does not create one global size. Add the required nominal opening, outside dimensions, depth, material, ingress target and mounting features. If a buyer asks for \u201cstandard junction box sizes,\u201d answer with the market and application first; a junction box intended for splices may have no device-yoke provision at all.<\/p>\n<h2>Dimensions that control fit and box fill<\/h2>\n<p>Measure three separate envelopes: the face\/opening envelope, the body envelope and the usable internal volume. Face dimensions control trim and cover fit. Body dimensions determine whether the box clears a stud, trunking or panel rail. Usable volume determines whether insulated conductors, grounding conductors, clamps and the device can coexist without strain.<\/p>\n<h3>Depth is not volume<\/h3>\n<p>A deeper box often adds cubic capacity, but wall ribs, internal bosses, sloped backs or a fixed terminal block can consume that space. Conversely, a wide box may have generous volume with a shallow cable path. Ask for marked internal dimensions or listed cubic capacity, not just an outside depth. An illustrative 40 mm body and a 40 mm usable cavity are not equivalent when a 6 mm boss or divider is present.<\/p>\n<p>Under NEC 314.16, each conductor, clamp and device allowance is counted using the applicable volume rules and conductor size. Use the listed volume and the actual conductor count; never infer compliance from a nominal \u201cdeep\u201d label. NEC 300.14 also requires a minimum free conductor length at the outlet, switch or junction point (commonly 150 mm\/6 in. measured from where conductors emerge), so a very shallow box can create a working-length problem even when its fill arithmetic passes.<\/p>\n<h3>Cable entries and mounting details<\/h3>\n<p>NEC 314.17 addresses conductor entries and protection from abrasion. Confirm whether the box is supplied with integral clamps, removable knockouts, threaded hubs, metric entries or plain cable glands. Entry direction matters: a top knockout that aligns with a rigid conduit may collide with a joist, while a rear entry can force a bend radius that the cable maker does not allow.<\/p>\n<p>Record screw-center spacing, ear or bracket projection, wall-thickness range, and whether the mounting hardware is captive. A box for masonry may need external lugs; a drywall box may use swing clamps; a panel-mounted terminal box may require a flange and gasket. Neither material is automatically suitable for every temperature, impact or UV exposure.
