Electrical Pull Box Dimensions: Sizing Checks and Installation Planning

A pull box ordered from a nominal conduit size can be too small when the actual entry arrangement changes from a straight route to an angle. The drawing must show where every raceway enters. Conductor size and pulling geometry determine which sizing provisions apply.

ملخص: Electrical pull box dimensions depend on the applicable rules, conductor sizes and straight, angle or U-pull geometry. Under NEC 314.28, particular sizing rules apply to boxes with conductors 4 AWG and larger. Do not apply a generic multiplier to every electrical box.

Identify the routing geometry before calculating dimensions

Start electrical pull box dimensions with a sketch of the raceway entries and conductor paths. Separate straight pulls, angle pulls and U-pulls. Identify conductor sizes, raceway trade sizes and any splices. A box that meets one direction’s requirement can still fail a different wall or entry arrangement.

For NEC applications within the scope of 314.28, straight pulls generally require a box length at least eight times the trade size of the largest raceway in the relevant direction. Angle and U-pull rules use a different arrangement of dimensions and sums. Verify the applicable edition, exceptions and complete geometry before procurement.

Check every entry arrangement and the actual internal envelope

For covered angle or U-pull arrangements, the commonly used six-times starting term is not the entire calculation: other raceways in the same row and the required spacing between relevant entries can also matter. Pull box sizing therefore needs a dimensioned drawing, not only the largest conduit diameter.

As an illustrative straight-pull starting point only, a 3-inch largest raceway gives 8 × 3 = 24 inches in the applicable direction. This does not establish the other dimensions, splice suitability or an approved installation. Confirm usable inside dimensions and any intrusion from hubs or fittings. A distribution enclosure is not automatically a suitable pull box.

Coordinate pulling space with installation and maintenance

Conductor bending space, access and the pulling plan need their own checks. A box may satisfy a minimum dimensional rule while being inconvenient to install because the cover cannot be removed or the raceway approach is obstructed. Review the assembled entry fittings and site clearances.

Do not assume a pull box is required at a universal distance such as every 100 feet. Raceway bend limits, pulling conditions and the applicable rules determine the arrangement. Where the route supplies circuit-protection equipment, coordinate the conductor selection and termination requirements with the final destination equipment.

NEC 314.28 addresses specified pull and junction-box arrangements, including conductors 4 AWG and larger. Other boxes may fall under different provisions. Verify the locally adopted edition and any permitted alternatives with the responsible designer before using a calculated minimum.

Send a dimensioned entry drawing and conductor schedule with the enquiry. CHAC Electric enclosure products should be considered only where their documented intended use and dimensions suit the approved design. Do not substitute a visually similar enclosure for a specified pull box.

الأسئلة الشائعة

What is the NEC code for pull box sizing?

NEC 314.28 is a key provision for covered pull and junction-box arrangements with conductors 4 AWG and larger. Confirm the exact scope and adopted edition for the installation.

How do you determine the size of a pull box?

Identify conductor sizes, raceway sizes, entries, splices and pull geometry. Apply the relevant rules in each direction and verify the usable internal envelope.

Do you need a pull box every 100 feet?

There is no universal answer based only on that distance. Raceway bends, pulling conditions and the applicable installation requirements determine where access is needed.

Is the six-times rule enough for an angle pull?

Not on its own. The applicable calculation can include additional raceway sizes and entry-spacing requirements; check the complete arrangement.

Can I use the outside dimensions of the box?

Use the dimensions required by the applicable rule and verify the actual usable internal space. Wall thickness and entry fittings can affect what is available.

Can a distribution box be used as a pull box?

Only where its intended use, construction and documented dimensions satisfy the project requirements. The product name or physical appearance does not establish suitability.
